How do I hook in a new syntax file?

I've opened a new file of type .syx, I've entered a few things in the entries given, saved the file where it's supposed to be, but now I can't figure out how to hook it in so when I open a file with appropriate suffix... you get it, right?
The syntax editor is no help at all. It does only what I could have done with the text editor itself. For some reason it isn't adding that syntax to the list of syntaxes you can open, also the example code doesn't show anything has changed. Same colors.
I've attempted to modify TextEd.ini, but any modifications are removed when I reopen the editor.
The .chm help file is also no help at all. No explanation.
