SOLVED? Display search results in different windows

Post by Qihe Pan »

Hi, could we consider supporting the display of search results in different windows? Users could open a new window for each search and have the new results appear in the active search result window

So that users can create multiple search result windows and select one for each search

If you right click inside the search result window - you'll find an option to "keep old results when running a new search". This allows you to have multiple search results in the same view.

I'm not fond of the idea of having multiple search result windows...

This function is extremely helpful for analyzing log files. Sometimes, many lines match the search pattern, resulting in search results that each contain hundreds of lines. This means I have to switch between search results repeatedly by folding and unfolding the results. If we could have an individual window for each search result, it would be much easier to navigate and review the large amount of data.

I don't fully understand your use case, so I may miss the point entirely, but just perhaps:
* open your logs as normal files in separate tabs
* use Search + "Highlight all items found" > Find All, or
* use RMC or menu Search > Highlight > Highlight expression (it can use regex), so you will have permanently marked search results

You'll be switching between tabs, not folding/unfolding search results, which should be more convenient. You could also file feature request to temporarily hide lines without highlights, giving you ability to see only "found" lines (no idea if that would be helpful for you, though).

The attached file is just an example; the actual file may be much larger. When searching for specific lines, such as lines 18 and 88 in the ddd results and other lines in the bbb results, I have to repeatedly expand and collapse the ddd and bbb results because the other results are always collapsed.

The actual file may be much larger, which means that the lines matching the search pattern could be far apart from each other.
