DONE: Custom sites in side-view panel

Post by ScrKiddle »

I dont know if it is a bug, but if not it is a feature request.

In the side-panel/side-view, there is a button to add preview-files, when i click on it a little window opens, there i can add a file or an URL.
I add https://devdocs.io/ and press ok, the URL is now in the list and in the select-box of the side-view.
I have an open document of type Markdown (*.md), the side-view shows the preview of the markdown-file.
Now i click the select-box on top and i select the https://devdocs.io/ site.
The site does not show up, and the side-view keeps showing me the markdown-preview.
I hit the refresh button, i change between internet-explorer and edge... how ever the configured site does not show up.

Ideally the selected site would show up, so a user can select the preview of the active file, or select any other configured site as given in the list of this little window where files or URLs can get added to.
Super nice it would be if URLs can get added per or pro syntax-highlighter.
So the select-box would use a different list of URLs or files, depending on the active syntax-highlighter, and on top the side-view of the active file.
Then a user can, in example, add different HTML-references to the syntax-highlighter for HTML, while on top is the preview of the active file.
Then the same for CSS or what ever.
If the user is editig a HTML files the select-box then will show all HTML-references and on top the preview of the active file, the the user can switch between preview or any given reference.
Then the user can activate an other tab with a markdown-file, so the select-box will show all the given markdown references and on top the preview.
And then there are some files which do not use a preview like python or what ever, and then the preview can switch directly to a given reference.
The references then get ordered in the little window where files or URLs can get added, but in the select-box the preview, if possible, is always on top.

That would be very handy. :-D

Done in version 16.68. You can test it in v16.68 beta 3, when released.

This is very cool... :-D

Just some little problems.

I get this window and i can add some sites like https://devdocs.io/ ... very nice.
Now i have an opened markdown file and i want to see it in the preview, but i did add a URL to the site list...
... how can i get the preview of the opened markdown file back?
I guess there should be a default entry like "Active file preview" or some thing like that, some thing that brings a user always back to the preview of the active file some how.
I did try the reload button, to change the browser engine from IE to Edge and back, to add a blank URL (and this is possible but does not help out).

May there your be a default entry to get back to the preview, always at top of the list.
May blank URLs should not be permitted, may better use `-` or `---` to add a separator-line in the URL-List
May the list of URLS could become a second column to name the URLs human-friendly lime |My lovely reference| https://somewhereintheinter.net|

... how ever, it already feels a lot better, even if i dont get back to the original preview of the active file :-D :-D

... by the way, i am not sure if it is worth a new feature request but in this preview panel i see IE like internet explorer ... i am not sure if this is still a thing in 2026 ... and edge
may it would may be some how bloatish but i would like to get a chrome engine and a mozilla engine and if it must be the edge engine, but for sure i would prefer chrome or mozilla ... but IE ??... some sites even block it completely.

IE-Engine:

Code: Select all

get the preview of the active file back i did also try to add file:// but this does of course not help, the site cant show.
also i cant enter some %file.%extension parameters like some where in the option because the open file dialog does not accept such a thing.
so i did try to open the file that is open in the editor and which was showed previous in the preview panel directly, but now the markdown preview looks like text plain.
the only hope to get the preview back is to empty the URL list, but then better to keep the URLs and to loose the preview.
